Institutional elements

For my magazine ad I decided to include institutional elements to it, however instead of just using existing ones such as itunes, facebook etc. I instead created my own logo for a made up download service, smooth downloads

Digipak - First Draft

Magazine Advert - First Draft

I changed my Magazine advert Idea as I felt the draft I came up with matche dthe video we created too much. I feel this picture fits the theme and tone of the album of the tracks on the album as a whole much more than my previous idea.

Ancillary Texts - Original Images

Making a title font - PhotoShop

We decided that we would have a go at making a title to use across the ancillary texts and video for the band and song. We thought it would be best if we had a consistent title to keep the same style across all the texts we are creating as that would be what proffessionals would do.

Practice Shoot

Although we have ultimately decided to go with 'where is my mind' as our music video idea we originally filmed a number of shots for the Dear Victor song. Although these songs will not be used to create a video they have allowed us to have a first hand experience of filming a video and working with different shots on the camera. Therefore when we commence production on our actual video we will already have had sufficient practice which would help massively.

Pitch Idea Impressions

Due to the feedback from our peers and our own personal preference when planning, we have decided to go with where is my mind by the pixies as our song of choice for the music video as recent posts would suggest.

Wednesday 21 September 2016

Filming Schedule

29th Sept - Thursday - Will film in town, outside the abandoned school, on tram and at School.

October - We will film at the tunnel and in the woods surrounding it.

October - We will film at a warehouse in town, for the second location.

Props List

Guitar.
Mask.

We need minimal props for the shoots due to our reliance more on costume and location.

Inspiration - Quick cuts (editing)

Below is a video i found on youtube which is a fan edited music video for the Twenty one pilots song 'Message Man'. It uses clips from Fight Club and Mr robot (two big influences for our video) and uses very clever and smooth cuts through brilliant editing. This is something that is inspiring us with when we come to shoot and edit our video, and not something we want to imitate but put our own spin on it.

Permisison to make Video

We contacted the manager of The Pixies, Richard Jones via email. Asking permission to make the music video for the song 'Where is my mind' to avoid copyright infringement.

Our other idea - Pitch

Our Idea - Pitch

Song Lyrics - Where is my mind

Ooh, stop

With your feet in the air and your head on the ground
Try this trick and spin it, yeah
Your head will collapse
But there's nothing in it
And you'll ask yourself

Where is my mind
Where is my mind
Where is my mind

Way out in the water
See it swimmin'

I was swimmin' in the Caribbean
Animals were hiding behind the rock
Except the little fish
But they told me, he swears
Tryin' to talk to me koi koy

Where is my mind
Where is my mind
Where is my mind

Way out in the water
See it swimmin'

With your feet in the air and your head on the ground
Try this trick and spin it, yeah
Your head will collapse
If there's nothing in it
And you'll ask yourself

Where is my mind
Where is my mind
Where is my mind

Way out in the water
See it swimmin'

Ooh
With your feet in the air and your head on the ground
Ooh
Try this trick and spin it, yeah
Ooh
Ooh

I feel that the song has a very sombre but surreal tone to it and this is something I would like to really represent in the final video we make through interesting use of camera (varied shots) and some more adventurous editing in post production (possible colour correction/fast cuts)

Mood Board

Mood board from David Thomas

This Mood Board really allowed me to compile lots of images that all represent the same theme and inhabit the indie genre. Therefore this means that I can now decipher the aspects of the genre I want to take inspiration from and create a video that adheres to the conventions of the indie rock genre.

Costume/Props

Location Recce Shots

Mapperley train tunnel, Nottingham
School Media Studio
Elms Primary School

The are shots of locations the music video will be filmed in, taking these shots allowed us to get of feel of the location and understand how the camera should be used to full effect. It allowed us to be able to understand the lighting needed in shots and how much space we had to move the camera and what kind of shots were possible. These shots were taken from online posts as we have not been able to go to the locations yet and will do so for the first time when we film.

Edited*

We eventually ended up not filming at the tunnel but instead in the woods surrounding it for the final scene of the video.

Brainstorming/Digipak Ideas

Below are some brainstorming ideas Guy and I had for the music video we are going to create. The fact that we did this allowed us to get a feel for the kind of narrative or visual story we wanted to present within our video, brainstorming different story ideas also allowed us to have a variety of ideas and the abilty to pick and choose the best bits from both. Note: This is very rough brainstorming
Digipak Ideas Here are the rough drawing we created of our digipak ideas. We are hoping to be able to create something unique that stands out and practising a variety of different drawings helped us do that.

Indie Rock/Alt Rock Target audience

Above is an infographic me and my partner both found which helped inform us of who the main target audience is for our chosen genre of music. Although it includes a few things we already had presumptions about and knew a few of the statistics it has also allowed to discover more about the genre and the kinda of audience we will bw targeting which is very helpful.

Record Label Research - Domino

Domino is originally a British record label set up in London in 1993. It is mainly focused on representing independent artists, therefore this would be the label that i think would be perfect for the band who I am making a music video for as their genre is indie rock. They represent many artists who have a similar sound to the band in my music video such as Franz Ferdinand and The Arctic Monkeys. Domino are definitely independent and find themselves overshadowed by larger conglomerates but definitely still keep producing quality music even if it isn't mainstream for massive artists, which is why i think they are unique ion themselves as a label.

Music Video Analysis - Twenty One Pilots - Heathens

Camera

Lots of close ups of the 2 artists faces are used regularly throughout the video, this is to perfectly convey to the audience the stars of the video and allow them to sell themselves as artists. This should also allow people to identify them easier when looking for their music. In addition to the close ups several mid shots of the two artists are used, this is to help see the instruments of the piece. This signifies that the bands are very focused on showing how they create music and the music itself instead of the star image.

Furthermore there are several establishing shots, these include long shots of the prison at the beginning and close up of the prison logo. These shots allow the video to set the scene and atmosphere for the upcoming video by allowing us to easily realise the location.

Mise-En-Scene

The characters throughout are dressed in either prison clothing or prison guard outfits, this costume choice is important as it allows viewers to identify the location due to the easily associated connotations of an orange jumpsuit, this will add to the videos verisimilitude and make it more effective overall. Furthermore the guard uniforms serve the same purpose, however add more powerful participants to the scenes giving the audience more reason to be invested in the situation the artist (in prison uniform) finds himself in.

Furthermore the drummer who is spotted at odd times throughout wears very dark clothing signifying the feel he should give the viewers. The use of the black clothing identifies the character as a possible enemy or negative stigma affecting the main artist as he navigates the prison, this lets the narrative express itself and makes it more interesting to the viewer.

Editing

At several points, especially towards the end during the performance on stage, the beats of the music coincide with quick cuts which lets them be emphasised signifying the importance of the music along with the video and showing their close connection. This also would also go with one of Goodwin's biggest theories of the music and visuals working together to create an effective video.

Also the editing performs a lot of cuts to scenes from the movie 'Suicide Squad', the movie the video was made for, this inter-textual reference works well as the video is set in the smae location as the film meaning the images of the artists original video and the film work well alongside each other and do not juxtapose.

Magazine advert Analysis - Part 2

Arctic Monkeys
This Advert is to promote the Arctic Monkeys upcoming tour and therefore the use of an image clearly from a previous tour helps to emphasise the purpose of the ad, to get people to attend the concerts. Showing fans enjoying the band performing would definitely get people interested in a at least checking out the artist and maybe go to the tour. The greyscale filter is also very effective as not only does it emphasise the band and their image thy are trying to present but it allows the background to fade naturally behind the main artist, who should be considered the focal point of the ad as he is the face of the band who are being advertised. Having the band’s name in a bold white font allows it to stand out against the greyscale background, this lets the viewer of the ad instantly realise who the tour is for and whether or not they would want to buy tickets for it. The white font also works for the names of the venues at the bottom allowing people to clearly see what locations the artist is playing at and make an easier decision of whether to attend the event.

Nirvana
This ad is to promote the 20th anniversary edition of a Nirvana album that came out in 1991, the ad uses the album cover as its image so that association between the two is very easy, furthermore the cover of Nevermind is one of the more controversial covers in mainstream music media in history so using it would be very effective in intriguing new fans and old due to how much it differs from album covers used today. It uses a big bold black font to set the release date apart from the other colours allowing interested customers to easily find details of its release. The blue colour scheme against the black font for the name of the band and album allows for easily drawing in potential customers as it stands out vibrantly. Also the interesting font used for the album, title can represent the more off the wall nature of the band, informing newer fans of this.

Magazine advert analysis

Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran Magazine Advert The advert for Ed Sheeran’s new album is very effective due to the large white font which presents it as very clear against the dark background allowing it to stand out for viewers. Furthermore the inclusion of the artist as the focus of the ad allows the artist to show viewers what he looks like to enhance his image and achieve further sales. Also although the ad is mainly for the new album, the inclusion of the main two singles allows fans of those singles to understand where they come from and therefore listen to more songs by the same artist if they wanted to easily.

Green Day
The Band Name is the biggest font on the ad which allows it to stand out, representing it as the main aspect of the ad is important so that viewers can easily identify the focus of the advert. The picture is a very emotive image allowing the band to stand out among others in their genre, putting the image in the centre allows this effect to be amplified also. Furthermore the bold white font allows the details of the download to stand out at the bottom of the ad. These details need to be able to stand out as they are the purpose of the advert and they do this effectively.

The Killers
The Killers ad is to promote their new album “Day and Age”, therefore it is very clever that they used the same cover of the album for the ad, this results in association being made easier by potential viewers when they decide to buy the album it would be easier to find. Also the design of the ad is very bright and vibrant which is very effective as it means the ad will catch audience members eyes.

Preliminary Photography Task

These are some pictures I took to test out different ISO, aperture and shutter speed settings, this was very helpful as it allowed us to see the different capabilities the camera has and the different types of shots it can create with varied settings whilst attempting to show the themes of  Trapped and Freedom.
